A master of cognitive psychology, Norman, mentioned three levels of emotion design. The first is the level of instinct, the second is the level of behavior, and the third is the level of reflection. The first two belong to objective cognitive state, which accepted by general public. But the third level of reflection varies from person to person, deeply relating to personal memory, experience, values, etc. It’s necessary to explore the meaning of objects and individuals in order to clarify the true cause of emotion. For example, when choosing the most valuable item in the family, people usually don’t pick the latest or most expensive one, but choose something looks inconspicuous, like a photo or an old sofa. If these emotions can be kept in the design item, it will have some kind of memory, image link to meet the viewer’s mental needs.

An accident of the operation in 2013 made me want to express it by designing a device in a reflective way. During the operation, my heart stopped beating for a while and was over the hump after emergency rescue. This makes me seriously start thinking about what death is. God made me have such special experience that no one else had, a certain right to speak of death, and death is no longer an empty imagination for me. Perhaps it is a gift from God, letting me express this experience through my works.

I designed this device to express the experience of operation and the recall. A pure white inflatable character lies in a confined and oppressive space, with red laser light swimming across the body, like a sharp blade intruding into it. At the end of the laser beam, the characters are projected dancing and walking on the abdomen. The background is the monitor of the fingers. Some parts of the image are dug out and incorporated into the background. The role of a new life coexists with the experience of surgery and lives like a newborn.
